Former Sierra Leone president, Ernest Bai Koroma has congratulated Senegalese president Macky Sall following his declaration yesterday not to seek re-election in the 2024 election.
President Sall last night said he will not seek third term in office as widely speculated, which critics call illegal and unconstitutional.
The former leader of Sierra Leone posted his congratulations message on Twitter.
He said: Macky Sall is “a true champion of peace & democracy!”
“Your unwavering commitment to upholding democratic principles by respecting the two term limit is truly commendable. Proud moment for West Africa”.
The speculated third term in office recently sparked riot in Senegal which was linked to the sentencing of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko.
Sonko was sentenced to two years in jail for alleged rape and ‘corrupting the youth’, which the opposition sees it as a way to outcast their leader in the 2024 polls.
Sonko has called on his supporters to protest over the earlier speculated third term saga.
