French Ligue 1 side Olympique Marseille have announced the signing of Gabonese striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from English Premier side Chelsea.
Last summer, the 34-year-old forward arrived at Stamford Bridge from Barcelona and made 21 appearances across all competitions for the Blues. Unfortunately, he scored just three goals during his time with the English club.
Aubameyang’s goals for Chelsea all came within a short period in October. He scored against Crystal Palace in the Premier League and netted in back-to-back Champions League group stage matches against AC Milan.
Despite a promising start, the departure of Thomas Tuchel had an impact on Aubameyang’s role at the club. He fell down the pecking order following the arrival of former Brighton and Hove Albion boss Graham Potter. The English manager preferred wingers and attacking midfielders over Aubameyang to lead the lines, resulting in limited playing time for the former Arsenal player.
Chelsea’s season ended on a disappointing note with a 12th-place finish and a concerning goal-scoring record.
Olympique Marseille is now the 34-year-old’s ninth senior club, following loan spells at various clubs early in his career. He previously played for St. Etienne before moving on to Borussia Dortmund, where he enjoyed great success, scoring 141 goals in 213 matches. Aubameyang’s time at Arsenal was also prolific, but he faced challenges, which eventually led to the loss of his captaincy before joining Barcelona.
