The Ghana Athletics Association has teamed up with the Ghana Education Service (GES) in an effort to enhance junior and senior high school athletics programs across the country.
Mr. Bawa Fuseini, president of Ghana Athletics, met with the boss of Ghana Education Service, Dr. Eric Nkansah, on Wednesday to discuss development collaboration between the two bodies. with a focus on supporting Inter Schools and Colleges competitions and the National Invitational Students Athletics Championship (NISAC).
In a post on their channels, Ghana Athletics stated: “The leadership has met the boss of Ghana Education Service, Dr. Eric Nkansah, to discuss development collaboration between the two bodies in enhancing the Junior & Senior High School Athletics, especially the Inter Schools and Colleges & NISAC Championships. More to come…..”
The Inter Schools and Colleges meets are annual track and field competitions held between senior high schools and colleges, which have produced numerous Ghanaian track and field stars over the years, including current professionals like Joseph Paul Amoah, Benjamin Azamati and Joseph Milli, who won gold in the men’s 200m at the just-ended African Games.
The NISAC, however, is an initiative by Ghana Athletics with support from the GES and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). The maiden NISAC was supposed to have been held in February but had to be postponed until the completion of the 2023 African Games.
These school athletics events have traditionally been a critical development pathway for identifying and nurturing young Ghanaian talent. Reinvigorating them is seen as key to developing the next generation of elite Ghanaian athletes.
Further details on the Ghana Athletics-GES partnership and initiatives are expected in the coming weeks.
