Residents of Fumbisi in the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region, have called on the government to as a matter of urgency complete road projects in the area.

The residents, who protested on Thursday against the government, said bad roads were negatively affecting their lives, businesses, education and health care delivery.

In a petition to President Akufo-Addo, the residents noted that the bad roads, aside from causing needless deaths through accidents, have also affected food production in Fumbisi – a rice-growing area.

Apaabey John Peter, one of the conveners of the protests said, “The delay in fixing the road has caused low patronage in the Fumbisi and Sandema markets due to the lack of interest by drivers to ply their commercial vehicles on this road coupled with robbery activities.”

“Essential service providers such as medical doctors, Teachers, Nurses and other professionals refuse postings to the municipality and district assemblies due to the bad nature of the road,” he added.

The residents said the government’s handling of road projects in the area painted a picture of neglect.

They said the Chuchuliga- Sandema- Fumbisi road, which was awarded in 2016 and was supposed to have been completed in 2019 was still in a deplorable state.

The residents noted that doctors, teachers, nurses and other professionals refuse posting to the Builsa areas due to the bad nature of the roads.

“We the people of Buluk in the exercise of our sovereignty as a people of Ghana and in further exercise of our right to demand our share of the national cake are convinced that every Ghanaian deserves to be happy.

By this, we wish to state that our collective happiness as Builsas is inextricably linked to the completion of the Chuchuliga- Sandema- Wiaga – Fumbisi- Wiese road.”

The district chief executive for Builsa South, Daniel Kwame Gariba, who received the petition on behalf of President Akufo-Addo, assured residents that road infrastructure in the area would be improved to aid mobility.

He said the Sandema – Fumbisi road, which has been of great concern to residents, will be completed in line with President Akufo-Addo’s vision to improve roads in the country.

The DCE stated that the Akufo-Addo government is the only government that has paid attention to the deplorable roads in the area and was working to improve them.

Therefore, he urged the residents to be calm as the District Assembly works closely with the appropriate authorities to address the pressing challenges the district was faced with.
