Ghana has announced a significant educational initiative offering 1,000 scholarships to students from across the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to study in Ghanaian universities.
President John Mahama made the announcement during the official launch of ECOWAS at 50 celebrations held at the Accra International Conference Centre on Tuesday.
“To mark this moment and strengthen regional bonds, Ghana is offering 1000 scholarships to tertiary students from across the sub region to study in our universities,” President Mahama declared.
The initiative forms part of Ghana’s commitment to promoting regional integration and development through education and youth empowerment as the regional body marks its golden jubilee.
During his address, President Mahama emphasized that the scholarship program represents more than just financial support for education.
“This is not just a gesture, it is an act of solidarity. It is a bridge to a future where our young people will grow up seeing each other not as foreigners, but as partners,” he added.
The announcement was made in the presence of various West African leaders and dignitaries who gathered in Accra to reflect on ECOWAS’s achievements and chart a path for future regional cooperation. The official logo for the 50th anniversary celebrations was also unveiled during the event.
Education experts view this initiative as a strategic move to strengthen academic and cultural ties across the region while addressing skill gaps and enhancing human capital development throughout West Africa.
The scholarships are expected to cover a wide range of disciplines and will be available to qualified students from all 15 ECOWAS member states.
