Ghanaian Scrabble sensation Betty Kyeremateng has continued her impressive run on the international stage, clinching 3rd place in the Division C category at the prestigious 2024 MGI International Scrabble Classics held in Milton Keynes, United Kingdom.
The 19-year-old’s stellar performance at the Leonardo Hotel saw her record 16 wins from her matches, level with Jake Haidar. However, Kyeremateng’s cumulative points tally of 579 proved decisive, earning her the third spot on the podium.
This achievement comes just two months after Kyeremateng secured a commendable 3rd position in the female division when Scrabble made its debut at the 13th African Games hosted by Ghana’s capital, Accra.
The Division C diadem was ultimately claimed by Nigeria’s Chiamaka Gabriel at the 3-day tournament, which boasted a total prize pool exceeding £11,000 across its three competitive divisions.
Kyeremateng’s compatriot, Haruna Adamu, narrowly missed out on a top-ten finish in his division, despite recording an impressive 13 wins from 25 games, due to a lower cumulative points tally.
The MGI International Scrabble Classics UK initiative aims to provide a platform for young and talented players from across the African continent to compete alongside the game’s elite, fostering growth and exposure on the international stage.
With over 114 players from various categories in attendance, the event underscored the growing popularity and competitiveness of Scrabble both in Ghana and globally.
Kyeremateng’s remarkable achievement further cements her status as one of Ghana’s rising stars in the world of Scrabble, following her recent success at the African Games on home soil.
As she continues to make her mark on the international circuit, the talented wordsmith’s exploits have drawn widespread acclaim, inspiring a new generation of Ghanaian players to aspire to greater heights in the intellectually stimulating game.
