Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations have been dealt a significant blow after a 2-0 defeat to Sudan in their fourth Group F match on Tuesday.
The match, played at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Benina, Libya, saw the Black Stars dominate the early stages, but they were unable to capitalise on their initial control.
Ghana’s Mohammed Kudus came close to opening the scoring on multiple occasions in the first 10 minutes as the West African side pressed forward. Inaki Williams also posed a significant threat for Ghana midway through the first half.
However, Sudan began to find their footing after the 15-minute mark, creating several nervy moments for the Ghanaian defence. The first half ended goalless, with both teams heading into the break on level terms.
The deadlock was broken in the 62nd minute when, against the run of play, Sudan’s Ahmed Al Tash found the back of the net with a right-footed shot from the edge of the six-yard box.
The Falcons of Jediane doubled their lead just three minutes later through Mohamed Abdelrahman, leaving Ghana reeling.
Despite attempts to respond, including adopting a more direct approach, the star-studded Ghanaian outfit was left frustrated at the final whistle.
The result leaves Ghana’s qualification for AFCON 2025 hanging in the balance, with the Black Stars now facing an uphill battle in their remaining group matches.
