South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a Special Official Funeral Category 2 for Dr Tito Mboweni, the former Minister of Finance who passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at the age of 65.
The announcement comes as a tribute to Dr. Mboweni’s significant contributions to the nation’s economic and political landscape.
In his statement, President Ramaphosa reiterated his condolences to Dr. Mboweni’s family and friends, praising him as an activist, economic policy innovator, and champion of labor rights.
The President highlighted Dr. Mboweni’s sharp focus on fiscal discipline and economic transformation, underscoring the lasting impact of his work on South Africa’s economic landscape.
Dr. Mboweni, renowned for his roles in shaping South Africa’s post-apartheid economy, served as the country’s first Minister of Labour from 1994 to 1999 under the leadership of Founding President Nelson Mandela. His illustrious career also included a decade-long tenure as Governor of the South African Reserve Bank from 1999 to 2009.
Most recently, Dr. Mboweni held the position of Minister of Finance from 2018 to 2021 in President Ramaphosa’s administration, where he was recognized for his commitment to fiscal discipline and economic transformation.
The state funeral is scheduled to take place at Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen, Limpopo, on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 10:00 AM.
The service will feature ceremonial elements provided by the South African Police Service, befitting the stature of the late minister.
President Ramaphosa has ordered the National Flag to be flown at half-mast at all flag stations from Wednesday, October 16, 2024, until the evening of the funeral, as a mark of respect and mourning.
