Ghanaian youngster Betty Kyeremateng etched her name in the history books by clinching the bronze medal in the women’s individual event in a thrilling debut for scrabble at the African Games.
She defeated Nigeria’s Tuoyo Mayuku in the bronze medal match to secure Ghana’s only medal at the multi-sport event it is hosting.
Nigeria’s Adebisi Adela took home the gold, while Kenya’s Marion Awuor claimed the silver medal in scrabble’s inaugural appearance at the prestigious African games.
The 12-nation tournament, which featured eight Anglophone and four Francophone countries, witnessed three days of intense wordsmith competition.
The country however failed to make a any impact in the team event in both male and female categories.
For the 20-year-old Kyeremateng, the bronze capped an impressive run on the scrabble boards amid huge expectations from home fans. Her performance provided one of the highlights for the host nation, that has been hailed for staging a historic competition in scrabble
