Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, is poised to continue his leadership role as the country ushers in its 9th Parliament under the Fourth Republic. President-elect John Mahama, following consultations with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives and Parliamentary leadership, has endorsed Bagbin’s nomination for a second term as Speaker.
Bagbin’s current tenure, which began on January 7, 2021, will formally conclude on January 6, coinciding with the inauguration of the new Parliament and the subsequent swearing-in of President-elect John Mahama, who emerged victorious in the December 7 election against incumbent Vice President Dr. Mahmud Bawumia.
The veteran parliamentarian brings extensive legislative experience to the role. Before ascending to the Speaker’s position in 2021, Bagbin served as Second Deputy Speaker from 2017 to 2021. His parliamentary career spans nearly three decades, having represented the Nadowli Kaleo Constituency as NDC Member of Parliament from 1993 to 2017.
With the NDC securing a commanding majority in Parliament following the recent elections, Bagbin’s reappointment as Speaker appears assured, backed by President-elect Mahama’s directive. This continuation of leadership suggests a stable transition for Ghana’s legislature as it enters a new political chapter.
