The Kenyan men’s 4x400m relay team made history on Sunday by breaking the African record while qualifying for the final at the 2024 World Indoor Championships in Glasgow.
The team of Boniface Ontuga Mweresa, Zablon Ekhal Ekwam, Kelvin Tauta Sane and Wiseman Were Mukhobe ran a blazing time of 3:06.96 to finish third in their heat and automatically advance to the gold medal final.
Their performance shattered the previous African record of 3:07.46 set by Nigeria in 2014.
The United States took first place in the heat in 3:05.56, while Belgium was second in 3:06.27.
The Kenyan squad got off to a fast start with Mweresa putting them in contention with the opening leg. Ekwam and Sane maintained the pace while Mukhobe brought it home on the anchor to secure their record-breaking qualification.
“We showed the rest of the world that Africa has arrived,” said head coach Paul Mwangi. “Now we look forward to the final where we hope to challenge for a medal.”
With their memorable African record run, the Kenyans underline their status as one of the emerging forces in men’s relay running. They will look to carry their momentum into the final as they aim for a podium finish.
