The Nigeria Super Falcons suffered a defeat in their second match of the 2024 Olympics football event in Paris, France. World champions Spain overcame Nigeria 1-0 in the Group C clash.
It comes after losing to Brazil in a similar scoreline three days ago.
The sole goal of the match came from Alexia Putellas in the 87th minute. She scored from a free-kick area, giving Spain the lead they maintained until the final whistle.
Prior to the goal, the match was closely contested and and Nigeria only needed to hold on for five more minutes to come away with a point, or even three.
However, a momentary lapse in concentration proved costly, resulting in a heartbreaking defeat.
Nigeria had several promising opportunities, particularly through Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade, but they failed to convert these chances. Oshoala made a notable solo run in the 65th minute, passing to Ajibade, whose shot narrowly missed the target.
Spain thought they had scored earlier in the 54th minute through Salma Paralluelo, but the goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR review.
A standout performer for Nigeria was their goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie. She displayed excellent form, making numerous saves to keep Spain at bay for most of the match.
With this result, Spain now leads Group C with 6 points. Nigeria sits at the bottom with 0 points, while Japan and Brazil have 3 points each.
The Super Falcons will need to significantly improve their performance in their next match if they hope to have any chance of qualifying from the group stage.
Despite their efforts and some promising play, Nigeria’s inability to capitalize on their chances proved costly.
The team showed moments of skill and determination, particularly in their defensive efforts, but ultimately couldn’t prevent Spain’s late breakthrough.
Despite showing they can compete with the world’s best, the Super Falcons now find themselves without a point after two matches, their impressive defensive efforts overshadowed by their struggle to find the back of the net
