President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Qatar, highlighting the importance of their bilateral cooperation for economic development and prosperity.
The Nigerian leader made these remarks after receiving Dr Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, at Aso Villa in Abuja on Friday. Dr Al-Khulaifi delivered a special message from the Amir of Qatar as part of ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
“I deeply value the strong and growing ties between Nigeria and Qatar, which are built on mutual respect, collaboration, and a shared commitment to economic development, peace, and prosperity,” President Tinubu stated.
“I look forward to deepening this strategic partnership in ways that bring greater investment, innovation, and opportunity to the Nigerian people. Nigeria is open for business, mutually-beneficial friendship, and future-focused cooperation.”
During the high-level meeting, the Qatari envoy announced plans for a delegation of business leaders from the Gulf state to visit Nigeria in the coming weeks. The delegation will explore investment opportunities in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, food security initiatives, and petrochemicals industry.
President Tinubu directed key ministers, including those responsible for Budget and Economic Planning, Information and National Orientation, and Foreign Affairs, to ensure prompt implementation of bilateral agreements reached during his state visit to Qatar earlier in 2024.
The Nigerian government has been implementing economic reforms, including changes to the tax system, aimed at creating a more favourable environment for foreign investors. These reforms form part of President Tinubu’s strategy to position Nigeria as Qatar’s strategic partner in Africa.
Both nations face similar regional challenges, including security concerns and supporting neighbouring countries. The strengthened partnership is expected to enhance cooperation in addressing these issues while promoting economic growth and development.
The Qatar-Nigeria relationship has evolved beyond government-to-government connections to include people-to-people ties, reflecting the deepening engagement between the two nations across multiple sectors.
