Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio marked his 60th birthday in a unique and touching way – by celebrating with some of the country’s less privileged citizens a day before turning 60.
On Saturday, May 11th, a day prior to his birthday on May 12th, the president spent part of his day visiting several charity homes and rehabilitation centers in the capital Freetown. He interacted with residents, listening to their stories and life experiences.
At the orphanage, President Bio helped serve food to the children and joined them for an early birthday celebration complete with cake and singing.
“As I turn 60, I am grateful to God for all his mercies and second chances. With great humility, I celebrated with persons who are less privileged and who remind me every day of the value of public service and of giving back to my people,” the president said.
Bio, a former military leader who became civilian president in 2018 distributed food and supplies contributed by well-wishers.
In his pre-birthday message, the president expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead and serve Sierra Leoneans. He said verbatim, “I thank God, and I pray that my country, Sierra Leone, continues to pursue unity, peace, and economic prosperity.”
