Kenya’s under-20 rugby team Chipu snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, scoring a last-gasp try to edge Namibia 34-28 in a thrilling opening match of the Rugby Africa U20 Barthes Trophy on Saturday in Harare.
The Chipu looked headed for disappointment after Namibia had fought back to level the scores at 28-28 late in the second half at Old Georgians Sports Club. But the young Kenyans showed tremendous perseverance, retaining possession expertly before spreading the ball wide for the match-winning score after the final hooter had sounded.
It was a heart-breaking finish for the Namibian under-20s, who had battled back valiantly from a 21-14 halftime deficit to draw level through a pair of second-half tries. But their defense was finally breached after a prolonged period of Kenyan pressure.
With the wake-up call of a narrow opening victory, the Chipu will look to build on the momentum as they face hosts Zimbabwe and Tunisia in the remaining rounds of this four-nation Barthes Trophy tournament in Harare. The biennial event represents the only junior international rugby competition in Africa.
Despite the disappointing loss, Namibia showcased their potential as an emerging rugby nation on the continental stage.
They will have a chance at redemption in their next two matches as they target a top-two finish to qualify for the eight-team Barthes Trophy final later this year.
This year’s tournament features four participating countries: hosts Zimbabwe, Kenya’s Chipu, Namibia, and Tunisia. The Barthes Trophy is the only junior tournament in Africa, with 8 national U20 teams competing for the prestigious title.
