The nation of Senegal is in a state of mourning following the passing of Mr. Maguette Thiam, a revered Associate Professor of Mathematics and former Minister.
The renowned professor of Mathematics Maguette was a highly respected figure in Senegalese academia and public service, known for his unwavering commitment to education and his ability to nurture future leaders, even in the face of political adversity.
In a heartfelt message, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye expressed deep consternation over the passing of Mr. Maguette Thiam, a revered Associate Professor of Mathematics and former Minister.
“It is with consternation that I have learned of the passing of Mr. Maguette Thiam, Associate Professor of Mathematics and former Minister,” the President wrote in a social media post.
Describing Thiam as an “educator at heart”, the President praised his legacy of training hundreds of executives who went on to serve the Senegalese state at the highest levels.
“An educator at heart, Mr. Maguette Thiam trained hundreds of executives who have served the State at the highest level,” the President said, offering his “sincere condolences to his family, his PIT comrades, and the Senegalese people.”
The President concluded his tribute by invoking a prayer for the departed, stating: “May ALLAH SWT grant him His forgiveness.”
Mr. Maguette Thiam was a man who embodied the resilience and determination to overcome political obstacles in pursuit of his ideals.
He suffered the wrath of the socialist regime. From the University of Dakar, he was exiled to the Djignabo high school in Ziguinchor then he was transferred to the Van Vollenhoven high school in Dakar before finally being brought back to the University of Dakar, according the chief of staff of the President of the Republic, Mary Teuw Niane in her tribute.
His transition into public office as a Minister further underscored his commitment to national development and serving the Senegalese
