Morocco’s Minister of Solidarity, Social Inclusion, and Family, Awatif Hayar, paid a visit on Thursday to the Moulay Brahim community in the Al Haouz Province, which was heavily affected by the September 8 earthquake.
Hayar inspected the operations on the ground to provide social and psychological assistance to the affected populations, visiting a mobile social assistance unit under the supervision of the ministry.
The unit, which the minister toured on Thursday, includes a mobile medical unit, a psychological support space, child protection and family meditation spaces, support for people with disabilities, as well as various children’s activities.
On the occasion of Eid Al-Mawlid Al-Nabawi, the minister’s visit also saw the distribution of clothing to the children present, following a group breakfast with them.
Speaking to the press, Hayar highlighted the actions implemented to guarantee victims of the earthquake a chance to redevelop and recover from the disaster, stressing that all government agencies “are working hard” within the framework of the special commission formed by the government for the purpose.
She also praised the “remarkable” psychological support and “strong support” for people with disabilities in terms of technical equipment.
A distance learning platform has also been set up to allow women to work on their own projects, she continued, noting that they received a workshop to receive training on how to start independent projects.
The September 8 earthquake shook several areas of central Morocco, taking nearly 3,000 lives and injuring over 5,500. Tens of thousands of homes have been affected, either partially or completely collapsing.
The Al Haouz province has been one of the most affected, with initial reconstruction and evaluation efforts now underway.
