Morocco is set to celebrate the 53rd birthday of Prince Moulay Rachid, the younger brother of King Mohammed VI, on Tuesday.
Born on June 20, 1970, in Rabat, Prince Moulay Rachid holds a significant place in the royal family as the youngest child of the late King Hassan II and his second wife, Lalla Latifa Hammou.
His siblings include King Mohammed VI, Princess Lalla Meryem, Princess Lalla Asma, and Princess Lalla Hasna.
Being the younger brother of King Mohammed VI, Prince Moulay Rachid assumes the second position in the line of succession to the Moroccan throne, following Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, the King’s son.
Prince Moulay Rachid has an impressive educational background, having obtained a degree in public law in May 1993, followed by a degree in comparative law from the Faculty of Legal and Economic Sciences and Social Services in Rabat.
Continuing his academic pursuits, he achieved a second certificate of higher studies in International Relations in June 1996. Later, he defended his doctoral thesis in Law titled “The Organization of the Islamic Conference: study of a specific international organization” at the University Montesquieu-Bordeaux IV in 2001.
Prince Moulay Rachid married Oum Kalthum Boufares in 2014: the couple welcomed their first child, Moulay Ahmed, on June 23, 2016.
From a young age, the Prince has shown a keen enthusiasm for cultural, social, and sporting activities. Currently, he is president of the Royal Moroccan Federation of Hunting Gun Shooting (FRMTAC) and the Foundation of the Marrakech International Film Festival.
In January 2018, he also took over the presidency of the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation (FRMG).
Prince Moulay Rachid is engaged in various social actions, and takes part in various Royal activities presiding over official events, both in Morocco and abroad.
He also represents King Mohammed VI in important national and international events.
In September 2022, he represented the King at the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II, which took place at Westminster Abbey in London.
In November 2022, the prince undertook another important role as he represented the king at COP 27, the world’s largest climate change event held in Egypt.
And most recently, in May 2023, he served as the representative of King Mohammed VI at the 32nd Arab League summit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
