The Atlas Lionesses of Morocco have been hailed for their spectacular display at 2023 Women’s World Cup, despite their crushing 4-0 loss to France in the round of 16.

The Moroccan women’s national football team have left a lasting impression on the international football community for their inspiring and historic World Cup journey, earning praises from FIFA and some international media networks

Their performance throughout the tournament, especially their bounce back from a heavy opening match defeat to qualify to the knockout stage, has earned them praise from various international press outlets. Many commenters and fans alike have highlighted their historic achievements and the strides they have made on the continental and global stages over the past two years.

The Atlas Lionesses have in effect written a historical journey by being the first Arab or North African nation to go beyond the group stage at the Women’s World Cup, and the only one of eight tournament newcomers to advance. A feat that was celebrated as a turning point for women’s football in Morocco. The team’s qualification for the last 16 of the Women’s World Cup has further solidified their status as a rising force in the sport.

Despite facing a soul-crushing defeat in their opening match against Germany, the Moroccan women displayed resilience and came back stronger, securing their first-ever victory in a World Cup match against South Korea.

The victory over South Korea, a team ranked 17th in the FIFA world rankings, was followed by another impressive win against Colombia, ranked 25th, in a hard-fought battle that saw the Atlas Lionesses claim a 1-0 victory that sealed their ticket to the round of 16.

The team’s performances caught the attention of the international media, with most observers hailing their spirited displays against higher ranked teams and announcing them as a rising force in world football.

The New Arab has described the Atlas Lionesses as not only turning heads on the field but also winning hearts worldwide, drawing parallels between the team’s performance and the iconic Atlas Lion symbol of Morocco.

FIFA itself has recognized the Atlas Lionesses as a rising footballing force, acknowledging their impressive World Cup journey and applauding their contributions to the growing diversity and competitiveness of women’s football on the global stage.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post has highlighted the Atlas Lionesses as a tangible result of long-term investment and strategic planning under the leadership of the Royal Family. The progress of the Moroccan women’s team is seen as a reflection of Morocco’s commitment to nurturing its footballing talent from the grassroots level to the international stage.

The Moroccan Women’s Football Team’s remarkable feat has not gone unnoticed by the Maghreb Press, which emphasizes that their success is a direct product of the continuous development and investment in Moroccan football, creating an environment conducive to achieving new heights in the sport.

Even in their exit from the World Cup, the Fox Soccer network has paid tribute to the Atlas Lionesses’ achievements during their debut appearance in the global tournament. They’ve managed to secure their place in the knockout stage, making history as the first Moroccan women’s team to participate in a FIFA Women’s World Cup.

As Atlas Lionesses return home, having made their mark on the international football landscape, their World Cup performances have both elevated the profile of women’s football in Morocco and demonstrated the potential of determined athletes to overcome obstacles and inspire change.
