Victoria Aransiola of Nigeria produced a sensational performance to win the women’s 200m final at the South Atlantic Championships in Hickory, North Carolina on Thursday.
The 19-year-old blazed to a massive personal best time of 22.87 seconds to take the victory at the Irwin Track at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C.
Aransiola’s blistering 22.87 clocking, aided by a 1.0m/s wind, shattered her previous personal record of 23.48 seconds. It also made her the fifth-fastest Nigerian woman in history over the 200m distance.
The Nigerian sprinter, who competes collegiately for Winston-Salem State University, held off a strong challenge from teammate Alexis Brown. Brown, the NCAA Division II record holder, had to settle for second place in 23.26 seconds.
Olivia Cosby of Winston-Salem State took third in 24.39 seconds.
Aransiola’s extraordinary 200m breakthrough will make her one of the favorites for the Nigerian championships later this year.
The South Atlantic Championships featured athletes from NCAA Division II programs across Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and several other states.
