A 40-year-old woman has died after setting herself alight in Nigeria’s Jigawa State, police say.
The incident occurred in Garin Mallam village in the Guri Local Government Area on Thursday.
According to police spokesman DSP Lawan Shiisu, the woman doused herself in petrol and set herself ablaze on the outskirts of the village.
“She was reported to have carried out the suicide on the outskirts of the village,” Shiisu said.
“Following this report, a squad of officers from the Guri Divisional Police Headquarters raced to the scene and verified the incident.
“The officers took the charred body to the hospital and later released the corpse to the family for burial.”
Initial investigations suggest the woman had been suffering from depression for several months following her divorce, he added.
The woman’s body was taken to hospital before being released to her family for burial.
Jigawa State Police Commissioner Ahmadu Abdullahi urged people to seek advice from elders when faced with difficult situations.
“We advise the public to turn to Allah for guidance and to consult with community leaders to avoid such tragic incidents,” he said
