The Nigerian wrestling juggernaut rolled on unabated at the 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana as Hannah Amuchechi Reuben secured the country’s sixth gold medal from the mat on a memorable Super Sunday.
It was an unforgettable “Super Sunday” for the female wrestling squad as they pulled off the historic clean sweep of all six gold medals at the 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana.
Reuben, a soldier in the Nigerian Army, added the icing on the cake for Nigeria as she was simply unstoppable in the women’s 76kg freestyle wrestling final, dominating Cote D’Ivoire’s Amy Youin 10-0 via technical superiority.
The commanding victory ensured the 30-year-old added the African Games gold to her rapidly growing collection of honors on the continental stage.
It was a perfect 6-for-6 golden haul as each of the six Nigerian wrestlers who competed emerged victorious in their respective finals on Super Sunday.
Mercy Genesis got the ball rolling by winning gold in the 50kg category, beating Egypt’s Mohamed Nada 7-0 in utterly dominant fashion.
Christiana Ogunsanya followed it up with Nigeria’s second gold medal in the 53kg event before Adekuoroye Odunayo made it three golds from three bouts in the 57kg division.
The unstoppable Kolawole Omolayo continued the rampage by clinching gold in the 62kg weight class.
Veteran grappler Blessing Oborududu then ensured the fifth gold for Nigeria by conquering the 68kg category with her usual class.
But it was Hannah Amuchechi Reuben, a soldier in the Nigerian Army, who had the honor of completing the historic clean sweep. The 76kg freestyle final was a mere formality for Reuben as she demolished Cote D’Ivoire’s Amy Youin 10-0 via technical superiority to make it six gold medals from six wrestlers compete for Nigeria.
With their incredible six gold medal haul so far, Nigeria’s female wrestling brigade has undoubtedly been the star attraction and flagship team at these African Games in Accra.
At the previous African Games in 2019, the Nigerian female team had won an impressive 7 out of 10 possible golds. But their 2024 Accra performance etched a new benchmark with an unprecedented 100% 6/6 clean sweep.
As the golden girls of Genesis, Ogunsanya, Odunayo, Omolayo, Oborududu and Reuben continue basking in their historic continental supremacy, their ultimate target is firmly on global domination at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
