Nigerian striker Asisat Oshoala etched her name in the history books after being crowned the African Women’s Footballer of the Year for an unprecedented sixth time at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards 2023 held in Rabat, Morocco on December 11., 2023.
She saw saw off the challenges from South African Thembi Kgatlana and Zambian Barbara Banda.
This historic win, announced at a ceremony in Morocco on Monday, solidifies Oshoala’s status as a legend of the sport.
Oshoala had won the award in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2022.
The 2022-23 season will go down as perhaps Oshoala’s finest yet at a personal level. She fired Barcelona Femení to the Spanish league, cup, and Champions League titles to complete an astounding treble. Her goals and overall play have been indispensable to Barcelona’s dominance.
For Nigeria, Oshoala was the driving force as the Super Falcons qualified for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup at the expense of rivals Cameroon. She promises to be a force to reckon with when the World Cup takes place in July-August in Australia and New Zealand.
