Nigeria’s first integrated power generation and distribution plant has officially launched operations in Aba City.
The $800 million Geometric Power project, built by former power minister Barth Nnaji, was commissioned on Monday. It will generate electricity and supply directly to consumers without using the national grid.
Aba will be the first metropolis in Nigeria to have reliable 24/7 power supply from the new plant.
At the launch event, Nnaji said the plant’s unique integrated model separates it from other producers that only generate or distribute.
One building is named after ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo, who approved the concession during his tenure.
Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi attended the ceremony and advocated for government policies that encourage local production. He said Nigeria’s growth depends on supporting ambitious private sector projects.
“I followed this project from the incubation stage about 20 years ago, as the then Chairman of one of the biggest commercial banks in Nigeria.
“I have followed its trajectory and I am delighted that, today, this huge vision, the Aba IPP has come to fruition.”
The plant is licensed to generate 188MW. Three active 47MW turbines were purchased from General Electric, with a fourth to be installed soon.
The launch of Nigeria’s first integrated power plant marks a significant milestone in improving electricity access. Backers hope the model will be replicated to boost power generation and availability.
