England are through to the quarter-final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup after producing a sterler display to see off African Champions Senegal in a largely one-sided encounter at the Al-Bayt Stadium on Sunday.
Goals from Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka secured a 3-0 victory for the Three Lions over the Lions of Tarenga to set up a mouth-watering quarter final clash with defending champions France.
England started the game on the backfoot and took a while to get going at the Al Bayt Stadium, with Senegal missing two glorious chances to take the lead in the opening half hour.
But moments after Jordan pickford pulled a wonderful save to deny Senegal an opening goal, Jordan Henderson rolled the ball home from a Jide Belligham back pass to open the scoring for the Three lions.
Captain Harry Kane scored his first goal of the tournament with powerful shot to finish off a sweeping counter attacking move to double England’s advantage with final kick of the half- a goal which gave Gareth Southgate’s men some breathing space at the interval.
After the break, Bukayo Saka scored a third for the European side to seal the victory shortly before the hour mark, with the Arsenal man delicately chipping Phil Foden’s pinpoint cross beyond to reach of Senegal keeper Edouard Mendy from close range.
The victory sends England through to the quarter final of the 2022 world cup where they will face European rivals and reigning world champions, France who defeated Poland 3-1 in their round of 16 clash earlier in the day.
