Newly inaugurated Senegalese president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye has appointed vibrant political figure, Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister.
His appointment was announced few hours after he was sworn in as the youngest elected president in Africa.
In a post on X, the presidency said: “A few hours after taking office as the president of Senegal, his excellency Faye has appointed Sonko prime minister.”
Sonko was integral going into the high tension election, that saw the president gaining 54.28% votes.
Mr Sonko is President Faye’s left wing political mentor and the two had been imprisoned just before the March elections.
They were granted amnesty, alongside many other political prisoners, by the outgoing President Macky Sall.
Ousmane Sonko is the leader of the biggest opposition party.
