Senegalese President has reiterated his pledge not extend his mandate beyond April 2.
President Macky Sall said he’s ready to step down at the end of his second term on April 2.
“It was never a question of overstaying my mandate,” he said in an interview on state-owned Radiodiffusion Television Senegalaise on Thursday.
A national dialog and the Constitutional Council can decided a new date for elections and a transitional leader if elections aren’t completed by April 2, he said.
President Macky Sall has served two terms in office.
On 15 February, the Constitutional Council annulled President Sall’s decree moving the vote to December.
It also voided the contentious bill passed by parliament which had backed the president’s decree.
The constitutionally original date for the election was 25 February.
A new date for the elections has not yet been given, but in its ruling the Constitutional Council said the president could not stay in power beyond the end of his term on 2 April.
