Sierra Leone have sealed their place in the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Tanzania at the Suez Canal Stadium on Saturday, continuing their fairytale debut in the competition.
Samuel Gandi’s 37th-minute strike proved the difference between the sides, with the goal requiring VAR confirmation before celebrations could begin in earnest. The result propels the West African newcomers to seven points from three matches, guaranteeing their progression from Group A.
This latest triumph follows their emphatic 4-1 demolition of tournament hosts Egypt last week, establishing Sierra Leone as the surprise package of the competition.
While the debutants continue to exceed all expectations, Tanzania’s tournament woes deepen as they remain rooted to the bottom of Group A without a point or goal to their name after two matches.
Despite creating the better chances in the opening exchanges through Bakari Msimu, Said Naushad and Cyprian Kachwele, the East Africans were made to pay for their profligacy when Gandi pounced on a rebound from Mohamed Bai Kamara’s initial effort.
Tanzania emerged with renewed determination after the interval, dominating possession as Jammy Simba and Ahmed Pipino both came agonisingly close to equalising. Substitute Vedastus Masinde and Anthony Mlingo also threatened late on, but Sierra Leone’s defence stood resolute to preserve their advantage.
Sierra Leone’s remarkable campaign sees them sitting comfortably atop Group A with seven points, having won two and drawn one of their three matches. Their goal difference of +5 underlines their impressive performances thus far.
Tournament hosts Egypt remain second with four points but have struggled to find consistency, managing just one win from three games. Their 4-1 defeat to Sierra Leone has left them with a negative goal difference of -2, raising questions about their title credentials on home soil.
South Africa currently occupy third position with three points from two matches, while Zambia sit fourth with two points from the same number of games—both remaining goalless after their recent stalemate with Egypt
Tanzania face an uphill battle to qualify, needing a victory against Egypt in their final group fixture on Friday and other results to go their way.
