Investigations are underway in South Africa after two police officers were found shot-dead metres away from a state vehicle in Roodepoort on Wednesday May 10, 2023.
The two detectives, who were attached to the Honeydew police station, were on duty at the time.
“Gauteng police have mobilised key stakeholders and resources to apprehend those behind the killing of two on-duty police detectives. Investigations are under way to determine the circumstances surrounding the killings,” police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said.
They are among five police officers to be killed in the past week, she said.
Three officers were murdered in Gauteng, with two others killed in the Eastern Cape.
“Gauteng police have mobilised resources to apprehend those responsible for this crime. The National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, is calling on community members to take a stand against police killings,” said Mathe.
According to Timeslive, on Sunday, two officers were shot while attending to a complaint in Atteridgeville. One of them died in hospital.
Last week, an officer serving as a court orderly at the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court in Gqeberha was shot dead.
On the same day, a public order police unit member was shot while responding to an armed robbery in East London.
