With just over two months to go until South Africa’s general elections on May 29, President Cyril Ramaphosa has took his re-election campaign to the township of Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng on Saturday.
Ramaphosa, who is seeking a second term as president under the banner of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), engaged with community members at the Vosloorus Stadium.
He used the opportunity to outline his party’s plan for tackling key issues like unemployment, crime, and poor service delivery should they retain power after the upcoming polls.
On the burning issue of crime and lack of safety, the President promised more police visibility and resources to combat criminals if re-elected. “No citizen should have to live in fear in their own community,” he stated.
Ramaphosa also pledged to urgently address service delivery failures witnessed in many municipalities across the country in recent years.
The President’s visit to the ANC stronghold of Ekurhuleni is seen as an attempt to shore up support in urban constituencies ahead of the hotly contested May 29 general elections. Opposition parties like the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have been making inroads in Gauteng’s municipalities.
Vosloorus falls under the Ekurhuleni Metro, a key battleground where the ANC will aim to retain its outright majority against a rising EFF challenge on May 29.
