Sudan returned to winning ways in their second 2026 World Cup qualifier by beating   Congo DR by 1-0 in a Group B clash played in Benina, Libya, jumping to the top of the table with 4 points.

An own goal by Charles Pickel Monginda was all Sudan needed to secure a narrow victory to brighten their chances of playing in the next World Cup.

The Secretary Birds had to relocate their home due to the civil war situation in their own country.

The match proved to be a test of resilience and determination for both teams, with Sudan ultimately emerging as the victors as they came into the game with a sense of urgency after their previous draw against Togo.

Sudan, in the second half, showcased excellent teamwork and attacking intent, creating promising opportunities to break the deadlock as the match went on. Their persistence paid off in the 79th minute when a stroke of misfortune struck Congo DR.

Charles Pickel Monginda, a professional defensive midfielder playing for Serie B club Cremonese, found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, as in a moment of despair for Congo DR, he inadvertently scored his own goal, gifting Sudan a vital lead.

The second half saw renewed determination from both teams. Sudan aimed to build on their advantage and secure all three points, while Congo DR sought an equalizer. The intensity of the match escalated, with tackles flying in from all directions. The referee had to frequently intervene to maintain order on the pitch.

Congo-DR tried various strategies to break through Sudan’s resolute defence. They made tactical substitutions and pushed forward relentlessly in search of a goal. However, Sudan’s defenders showcased exceptional discipline, making crucial interceptions and blocks to protect their lead.

As the final whistle approached, tension filled the air. Sudan’s players displayed immense concentration, knowing that their first victory in the World Cup qualifiers was within reach. The Congolese team fought until the very end, but Sudan’s defensive resilience proved too challenging to overcome.

With the final score line reading 1-0 in favour of Sudan’s victory, it not only boosts their confidence but also revitalises their hopes of progressing to the next stage of the tournament.
