South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns secured a 1-0 win in extra time, despite goalkeeper Denis Onyango’s 83rd-minute dismissal. It was Mngqithi’s first competitive match in charge since Rhulani Mokwena’s departure.
However, the performance did not impress former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye.
Junior Khanye, a former Kaizer Chiefs winger, told iDiski Times: “Mamelodi Sundowns were too predictable because they did the same thing every time until the first half ended.”
He added: “The reason Sundowns were not themselves is that a couple of players who play in vital positions were off. So, it was very difficult for Sundowns to function as a team.”
Khanye urged Mngqithi to develop alternative strategies, saying: “I think Manqoba needs to have a plan B going forward to other games. You need wingers right and left up front. You can’t rely on full-backs because this is a game where you become predictable.”
Sundowns, who lost last season’s final to Orlando Pirates, face Stellenbosch in a two-legged semi-final.
The club are also looking to defend their Premier Soccer League title and win the CAF Champions League, which Mngqithi has identified as a priority.
With little room for error, Mngqithi, along with assistants Steve Komphela and Romain Folz, must work to ensure the team regains its form following Mokwena’s exit.
Sundowns’ significant investment in their squad means expectations remain high for the upcoming season.
