Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Matias Esquivel has joined Argentine side Club Atlético Talleres on a season-long loan.
The South African champions have now seen seven players depart, including Bongani Zungu, Gaston Sirino, and Brian Onyango.
Esquivel’s move comes just six months after joining Sundowns. The left-footed midfielder previously played for Talleres in 2022 before a stint at Lanus.
His departure is reportedly due to limits on foreign players in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL). Sundowns currently have six non-South African players, with only five permitted per club.
Talleres announced Esquivel’s arrival on social media, praising his versatility and technical ability.
“The Scouting Department of Club Talleres has closely followed the evolution of Matías, highlighting his versatility to occupy more than one position within the midfield,” the club stated.
“Esquivel is a player who can provide solutions to the team, generating danger in the last third of the playing field.”
The Argentine club also noted Esquivel’s “good repertoire of dribbles, assists and execution of mid-distance shots”.
Talleres face a busy season with involvement in three competitions. They expressed confidence that Esquivel’s recent experience has improved his decision-making on the pitch.
