SuperSport will not be broadcasting the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 tournament, according to a statement released by Multichoice on Wednesday, after failing to secure the broadcast right.
Multichoice, the owners of SuperSport and previous holders of the AFCON broadcast rights, said they could not reached an agreement with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the rights to show AFCON 2023.
In a statement on Wednesday, SuperSport revealed their bid to secure the broadcast rights with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) was unsuccessful.
“SuperSport Channel will not broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 scheduled for January 13th – February 11th, 2-24, because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament,” it said.
This ends a long relationship between the channel and the tournament, which SuperSport has broadcast since 1996.
“However, AFCON 2023 games will be available through our partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels,” Multichoice’s statement said.
“Multichoice Africa remains committed to ensuring football fans across Africa continue to enjoy unrivaled access to entertainment and football games available on DStv and GOtv platforms including, the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Zambian Super League, and many more of football’s most prestigious competitions,” it added
AFCON 2023 is set to take place in Cote d’Ivoire from January 13th to February 11
