Amnesty International has criticized Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s administration for failing to uphold human rights and the rule of law after six months in office.
Six months into his presidency, Bola Tinubu is facing mounting criticism over alleged human rights abuses and security issues plaguing Nigeria. According to a series of tweets by Amnesty International on Tuesday, the Tinubu administration has failed to ensure respect for human rights and rule of law.
The organization listed several human rights abuses under Tinubu’s administration, including the failure to address rising costs of living triggered by fuel subsidy removal and increasing taxation amidst unprecedented inflation.
The scathing critique highlights economic policies that have allegedly contributed to a “rising cost of living triggered by the removal of fuel subsidy and increasing taxation amidst unprecedented inflation.” With many Nigerians struggling under mounting economic pressures, Amnesty accused the government of ignoring their plight.
Additionally, the tweets condemned the rampant attacks by armed groups known locally as “bandits.” These gunmen have terrorized rural communities and travelers in northern states like Zamfara, Katsina and Sokoto. Despite the repeated violence, Amnesty claims authorities have failed to secure these vulnerable areas.
Violence has also erupted in the southeast, where “rampaging gunmen have repeatedly carried out violent attacks,” the human rights group said. They urgently called on officials to curb the rising insecurity and unrest across multiple Nigerian regions.
Amnesty International’s allegations underscore growing discontent with President Tinubu’s leadership as he passes his administration’s six-month milestone. By calling out major economic, security and human rights issues, they have increased scrutiny over whether Tinubu can deliver on promised reforms as president.
Government spokespeople have yet to directly address the Amnesty International thread. But the pressure is mounting for Tinubu and his cabinet to respond to these damning human rights allegations just half a year into his term.
While Amnesty shone a spotlight on Nigeria, some on social media questioned why the organization was targeting Tinubu when far worse human rights atrocities are occurring in places like Gaza.
