Tunisia have emerged as the new champions of the Western Regional Baseball5 Championship after a tense 2-1 victory over Ghana in Sunday’s final at the NIS Sports Complex Gymnasium.
The North African side, who had previously bested Ghana in the group stage, reaffirmed their dominance in a closely contested match that went to a deciding third set.
Tunisia set the pace early, claiming the first set 9-5. Ghana fought back to level the match 1-1 with a 4-2 win in the second set.
The final set was marred by controversy, with a disputed umpire’s decision leading to a seven-minute stoppage. Play was further disrupted when another call against Tunisia sparked additional protests.
Despite the interruptions, Tunisia displayed remarkable composure, ultimately securing a 9-5 win in the final set to clinch the championship.
“Tunisia’s resilience and tactical discipline were the keys to our victory today,” said Tunisia’s manager Sofine. “This was a true test of character, and we are proud to be the champions of the Western region.”
Both finalists have qualified for the continental championship, where they will face Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe for Africa’s spot in the World Cup.
In the third-place play-off, Nigeria defeated Benin Republic 2-0.
