The United Nations Security Council is expected today 2nd October, to vote on the a decision that will allow an international police force led by Kenya to curb the surge of gang violence in Haiti.
A 15-member council is set to come up with a framework. A one-year deployment of the force is expected with a review after nine months.
Kenya and the US signed a defense agreement on last week Monday that will see the East African nation get resources and support for security deployments as it is poised to lead a multi-national peacekeeping mission to Haiti to combat gang violence.
Kenya has promised to deploy 1,000 police officers early next year, Jamaica, Bahamas and Antigua and Barbuda has also planned joining this mission if approved.
The United States of America has pledged $100 million in support of the mission, according to BBC.
The force has planned to train Haiti Police and rebuild vital infrastructure which has been overwhelmed by the criminal gangs.
Haiti has suffered gang violence for years, in July 2021, president Jovenel Moïse was assassinated.
