Germany secured a commanding 6-0 victory against Morocco on Monday, in the teams’ first games at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

German star Alexandria Popp, who plays for VfL Wolfsburg, opened the scoring in the 11th minute only seconds after having a header blocked.

In the 39th minute, Popp scored again with an assist from Klara Buhl from a corner kick.

The second half continued the pattern, with Buhl capitalizing on a Moroccan mistake right after the kick-off to score the Germans’ third goal.

Despite attempts to reorganize, Germany got a fifth goal in the 54th minute through a mistake on the Moroccan side, as defender Hanane Ait El Haj mistakenly placed the ball in her own goal.

Another mistake followed in the 79th minute, as Yasmin Mrabet scored another own goal from an attempted clearance, widening the gap between the two teams.

As the game drew to a close, Lea Schuller added another goal for the Germans in the 90th minute.

Germany, considered one of the best teams in Europe and the world, are considered favorites for Group H, which also includes Morocco, South Korea, and Colombia.

Morocco is participating in the competition for the first time ever, following a run to the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in 2022, where they ultimately lost to South Africa.

With this victory, Germany leads Group H at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Meanwhile, Morocco will look to regroup and learn from their experience as they face off against South Korea in their upcoming match.
