Morocco ranks 11th on a list of countries that have the least amount of alcohol consumption.
According to data from the Global Health Observatory cited in a report from Insider Monkey, nearly 95% of Moroccans do not consume alcohol.
While alcohol consumption is not illegal in Morocco, it is heavily regulated and highly frowned upon in conservative quarters.
According to Morocco’s e “2021 Financial Law Implementation” report, the country collected $86 million in import duties for alcohol and wine, while the import duties on beer reached $106 million.
Topping the list of countries with the least alcohol-consuming population is Libya, where the non-alcoholic population stands at 99.5%. Following are Afghanistan at 99.1%, and Yemen at 99%.
Worldwide, estimates indicate that 35% of men are non-drinkers, while the rate falls to 55% for women.
Alcohol is currently partially or completely outlawed in several countries. All of the said countries have a majority Muslim population, with governments that partially adhere to some form of Islamic law.
Meanwhile, Romania heads the list of countries with 27.3 liters of pure alcohol in 2019, or an average of 8.2 drinks per day per capita. The market for alcoholic drinks was valued at a staggering $800 million in the country.
The global alcohol consumption, measured in liters of pure alcohol per person of 15 years of age or older, stood at 5.5 liters in 2019, which is a 4.7% relative decrease from 5.7 liters in 2010.
The global market size was valued at $1.62 trillion in 2021. The market is expected to grow to $2 trillion by 2031.
