A well-rounded blend of experienced champions and promising up-and-coming talents of six females and five males makes up the 11-member Kenyan team, which looks formidable for potential podium finishes in Paris.
The star-studded squad is headlined by legendary long-distance runner Eliud Kipchoge, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and winner of 10 Abbott World Marathon Majors races.
“There we go!! Athletics Kenya names marathon team to the 2024 paris olympic games,” it said.
Kipchoge will spearhead the men’s marathon team alongside in-form athletes Benson Kipruto, Timothy Kiplagat, and Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich.
Kipruto comes into the Olympics riding high after his recent victory at the Tokyo Marathon in February, where he set a new course record of 2:02:16, with Kiplagat and Ngetich finishing close behind in that race, clocking 2:02:55 and 2:04:01 respectively.
27-year old Alexander Mutiso who placed 2nd in the valencia Marathon in December joins to complete the squad of five announced on Thursday.
The women’s marathon team is equally as daunting, led by two-time Olympic champion Brigid Kosgei and comprising world-class talents like reigning Olympic gold medalist Peres Jepchirchir, former world champions Hellen Obiri and Rosemary Wanjiru, and the rising star Sharon Lokedi.
The team will be coached by the renowned trio of Amos Korir, Nicholas Koech and Patrick Sang, with former marathon great Mary Keitany serving as team coordinator.
With just over three months until the 2024 Paris Olympic Games kick off on July 26 and run through August 11, Kenya’s marathoners are already in full motion with their preparations to etch their names in Olympic folklore.
