The Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed Ali, has directed top federal officials to take urgent steps to fast-track the completion of three critical infrastructure projects in the city of Gondar and surrounding areas.
It comes upon his visit to the Amhara Region this weekend.
The move comes after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali’s visit to the Amhara Region over the past weekend, where he took stock of the progress on these development initiatives considered vital for the region.
In a statement released today, the Prime Minister’s office said he convened a meeting with senior federal leaders to review the status of the Megech Dam, efforts to improve Gondar’s water supply system, and the construction of an 11km road linking Azzezo and Gondar.
“After my visit to the Amhara Region this weekend, I brought together top federal leaders to review the progress and expedite the completion of three critical projects in Gonder: the Megech Dam, improving water supply in the city, and finishing the Azzezo to Gonder 11km road. Based on this morning’s assessment, I’ve instructed adjustments in project management to accelerate their completion in the coming months.”
Dissatisfied with the current pace, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali instructed his team to make adjustments to the projects’ management in order to accelerate their completion over the coming months.
The Megech Dam, located south of Gondar, is expected to provide hydroelectric power and irrigation benefits once operational. Improving water infrastructure in the ancient city itself has been flagged as a priority to address supply shortages.
Upgrading the road connection between the towns of Azzezo and Gondar will also bolster transportation links in the area.
