Ghana’s James Kwesi Appiah has arrived in Saudi Arabia, ahead of an official announcement to commence their roles as the technical handlers of the Nile Crocodiles.

It comes just a few days after I was voted to serve as an executive committee member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The decision to finalise the deal in Saudi Arabia comes as a result of the political unrest in Sudan.

Appiah arrived in Saudi on Monday with his assistant, Ignatius Fosu, and goalkeeper’s trainer, Fatawu Dauda, forming the technical trio to bring their expertise and experience to help the Crocodiles return to a strong football force.

Coach Appiah, a highly respected figure in African football, brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the Sudan national team. Having previously served as the head coach of the Ghana national team on two different occasions, he is well-versed in managing teams at the international level. His arrival has generated excitement and optimism among Sudanese football enthusiasts, having earlier handled club side Al Hilal Omdurman.

The Nile Crocodiles thus become his second National team to handle after leading the Black Stars in the 2013 AFCON, 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2019 AFCON.

Ignitius Fosu, one of Coach Appiah’s trusted assistants, is known for his tactical acumen and ability to analyse opposition strategies. With his vast experience in scouting and handling some Ghanaian clubs like Techiman Eleven Wonders, Medeama Sc, and Dreams FC, he will play a crucial role in shaping the team’s tactics in support of his boss.

Fatawu Dauda, the appointed goalkeeper trainer, who played in the 2014 World Cup under Appiah’s tutelage, brings his expertise to developing and refining the skills of goalkeepers. Having represented Ghana at the international level himself, Dauda understands the intricacies of this specialised position and will work closely with Sudan’s goalkeepers to enhance their performance and build a strong defensive foundation.

The Sudan Football Association expressed their delight in welcoming Coach Appiah and his assistants to the national team setup. They believe that their collective experience and coaching philosophy will have a positive impact on the players’ development and overall team performance.

Coach Appiah and his team are eager to get started and have already begun assessing the squad’s strengths and areas for improvement. They plan to implement a comprehensive training programme that focuses on enhancing the players’ technical skills, improving tactical understanding, and fostering a winning mentality within the team.

The Sudan national team, under the guidance of Coach Appiah, will be preparing for upcoming competitions, including international friendlies and qualification matches for regional and continental tournaments.

Their ultimate goal is to bring glory to Sudanese football by establishing a competitive and respected national team on the African stage after the Crocodile’s failure to qualify for the 2023 African Cup of Nations to be staged in Ivory Coast in January next year.

The Sudan Football Association is expected to make an official announcement soon, according to reports.
