The African Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen has agreed in principle to sign a new contract at Napoli, according to reports.
The Chelsea target’s current stay ends in 2025 and the agreement will extend his stay by a further 12 months, despite the Serie A holders initial desire to tie him down until 2027.
This is a smart move by Napoli to ensure an agreement is in place before the January transfer window. A move next summer remains on the cards as Osimhen’s new deal will include a tempting release clause.
Reports say Napoli have agreed to insert a clause worth €120m (£112m) into Osimhen’s contract, with the feeling being that any interested party would need to pay that figure to prise him away.
The Napoli striker was named African Player of the Year for his incredible campaign with the Italian club and Nigeria at the CAF Awards 2023 gala in Marrakesh, Morocco, on Monday December 11.
Osimhen after edging Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah and PSG right-back Achraf Hakimi, who were the other two finalists nominated for the award wrote on X: “My football journey has been a rollercoaster of highs, tough lows and emotions.
