Accra – The 13th African Games kicked off in spectacular fashion on Friday evening with a breathtaking opening ceremony that celebrated Ghana’s rich culture and the unifying power of sports.
Over 9,000 spectators packed into the University of Ghana Stadium, creating an electric atmosphere as the night’s entertainment unfolded.
Ghana’s biggest musical stars took center stage to thrill the energetic crowds. Shatta Wale, Pat Thomas, King Promise, Ebo Taylor and South Africa’s Kamo Mphela delivered mesmerizing performances that had fans dancing in the aisles.
The visually stunning ceremony featured elaborate cultural dances, bright colorful costumes, pulsating drumming and immersive audiovisual displays showcasing Ghana’s diverse heritage.
The grand arrival of the athletes’ parade provided goosebump-inducing moments as the continent’s finest competitors waved proudly to the roaring crowds.
In his opening address, Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo extended a warm welcome to the over 5,000 athletes from across Africa. “It is with great pleasure and honor that I welcome you all to the 13th edition of the African Games here in Ghana, one of the founding members of this prestigious event,” he stated.
The President commended the athletes’ unwavering commitment and determination to reach the Games despite facing challenges. “You have shown immense belief in yourselves, striving to do your best. These moments will be etched in your memories forever. I urge you to step onto the stage with confidence and showcase the power of sports.”
As the final baton lit the Games cauldron, the vibrant celebrations spilled out from the stadium onto the streets of Accra. This epic start to the 13th African Games has set the stage for two weeks of world-class competition and the sacred unity that sport can bring.
A total of 43 countries are participating in a 29 sporting disciplines at the African games which had already recorded some remarkable performances from athletes prior to the official launching on Friday.
The event is expected to attract 5,000 top athletes, 3,000 officials, and many local fans, while reaching an estimated global audience of 2.2 billion people through television and social media.
Organised by the African Union (AU) in partnership with the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and the Association of African Sports Confederations (AASC), the event is taking place in Accra, Ghana, from 8 to 23 March.
