The African Union Commission in statement on Friday has urged parties involved in the fighting in Sudan to ceasefire.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission H.E Moussa Faki Mahamat has called upon the Sudanese parties to ‘observe a total Ceasefire’ throughout the holy month of Ramadan.
“The Chairperson recalls that such a ceasefire could help facilitate the dispatch of humanitarian aid to civilian populations in dire need,” the statement read.
“The Chairperson urges all the parties to shoulder their responsibilities to prevent the serious risk of famine and other humanitarian catastrophes to befall the Sudanese people and the neighbouring States”.
The Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been fighting since mid-April over plans for a political transition and the integration of the RSF into the army, four years after long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir was overthrown in a popular uprising.
