Ghana will not participate in the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco after the Black Stars failed to secure a win against Angola on Friday.
Niger’s 4-0 victory over Sudan had given them a chance but Jordan Ayew’s early lead was canceled late by the Angolans who have already qualified.
This marks the first time in 20 years that Ghana will not feature in the African Cup of Nations, following their failure to qualify for the 2004 AFCON.
Despite Jordan Ayew’s excellent free-kick goal in the first half, Angola dominated possession and created more scoring opportunities.
The Palancas Negras had already qualified for AFCON with 12 points, and this 1-1 draw with Ghana brings their total to 13 points with one game remaining.
They will play their final match against Sudan next week. Niger, with 4 points from four games, still has a chance to qualify if they win their last game and Sudan loses theirs.
For Ghana, this is a significant setback for the football nation, following their group stage exits in the last two AFCON tournaments. They failed to win a single match in the group.
They have also failed to win a single game in the qualifier and a victory against Niger on Monday wil change nothing as the contest for the available ticket now lies in the hands of Niger and Sudan.
