Spanish-born Moroccan Brahim Abdelkader Díaz has requested a period to decide on his future at international level and more specifically which country he will represent moving forward, Atlas Lion Coach Walid Regragui has said.
Brahim Diaz has not been called up by Walid Regragui for Morocco’s next matches as the surprise package of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will face Brazil and Peru in friendlies at the end of March.
Announcing his squad at a media conference on Monday, Regragui confirmed that he has spoken to the playmaker but did not want to apply too much pressure on him.
“I went to Milan to meet Brahim Diaz. He has dual nationality and there was a sincere chat, he was honest. There are no negotiations but he has asked for a period of reflection to decide between us and Spain. He loves Morocco but it will be his decision,” he said.
Brahim, 23, was born in Spanish City of Malaga and currently plays as forward for Serie A club AC Milan, on loan from La Liga club Real Madrid. He has represented the Spain national team at youth level.
The attacking midfielder, who has represented La Roja at U17, U19 and U21 level, made his senior debut for the national side in June 2021.
He made his debute at age 16, then impressing with good performances for Spain’s U17s in the 2016 UEFA European Under-17 Championship.
Back in 2021 a number of U21 players were called up to play for the senior national team due to a wave of positive Covid cases in the camp meaning Brahim made his debut in a 4-0 victory against Lithuania and scored the second goal. However, he still has just one cap.
