Egypt’s Olympic football team have reached the semi-finals for the first time in 60 years after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Paraguay.
The Pharaohs won 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time in Friday’s quarter-final in Paris.
It marks only the third time Egypt have reached the last four of the Olympic football tournament, with their previous appearances coming in 1928 and 1964.
In a tense match, Egypt created the better chances but found themselves behind when Diego Gomez put Paraguay ahead in the 71st minute.
Ibrahim Adel equalised for Egypt with a powerful header just two minutes from time, forcing extra time.
With no further goals, the tie went to penalties. Egypt goalkeeper Hamza Alaa saved from Marcelo Perez before Adel converted the decisive spot-kick to spark jubilant celebrations.
Egypt will face hosts France in Monday’s semi-final.
