Ghana will have two representatives in the men’s 100m semi-finals at the Paris Olympics after Abdul Rasheed Saminu joined Benjamin Azamati in qualifying.
Saminu secured his place after finishing third in heat 5 with a time of 10.16 seconds.
His qualification comes after compatriot Azamati had earlier booked his spot by finishing second in heat 1 with 10.08 seconds.
Azamati clocked 10.08 seconds to secure automatic qualification, finishing behind Jamaica’s Kishan Thompson, who won the race in 10.00 seconds.
Cuba’s Reynaldo Espinosa took third place with a time of 10.11 seconds.
Competing in Heat Five, Saminu finished third in his heat with a time of 10.06 seconds.
He followed Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi, who won the race with 10.02 seconds, and Italy’s Marcel Jacobs, who finished with 10.05 seconds.
The Ghanaian duo are two of 11 African athletes to have progressed to the semi-finals of the blue-riband event.
The semi-finals are set to take place on Sunday, with both Ghanaian sprinters aiming to progress to the final of the blue-riband event.
Their performances mark a strong showing for Ghana in the men’s sprint events at these Games.
