Theresa Kufour, the former Ghana first lady and gender empowerment campaigner, has died at the age of 87.
Theresa Kufuor, a retired nurse and midwife, was the wife of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, the second President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.
Her death was announced at midday of Sunday, October 1st
Mrs. Kufour, who was first lady from 2001 to 2009, had been in failing health for some time, according to reports.
She was two years older than her husband, who, at 84, is the oldest surviving former president of the country.
While serving as First Lady, Madam Theresa set up the Mother-to-Child Community Development Foundation to help in the proper development of children and prevent mother-to-child transmission of diseases.
